Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, a deep-water port, and the capital of the emirate of the same name. It is a key trade and financial hub not only for the UAE but for the entire Middle East. The city stretches along the coast of the Persian Gulf. As of 2022, Dubai's population is approximately 3.6 million, with over 90% of residents being expatriates.
Founded in the 19th century as a fishing village, Dubai began to develop into a significant regional and international trading hub in the early 20th century, focusing on the tourism and luxury industries. While oil revenues have played a role in accelerating the city's development, by 2018 their contribution to the emirate's GDP was less than 1%. From 1954 to 1971, Dubai was the administrative capital of the British protectorate known as Trucial Oman.
The city regularly hosts various international events, including conferences, festivals, and exhibitions. In particular, it hosted Expo 2020 from October 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022.
