The stadium, known as the Riyadh Air Metropolitano or Peineta (Scallop) in Spanish, is located in Madrid and has served as the home of Atlético Madrid since the 2017/2018 season.

On December 9, 2016, it was announced that the new stadium would be named the Wanda Metropolitano. This name refers to the Chinese company Wanda Group, one of the club's owners, and the historic Metropolitano de Madrid stadium, where the team played from 1923 to 1936 and from 1943 to 1966.

The first official match at the new stadium took place on September 16, 2017. In the fourth round of the Spanish championship, Atlético Madrid defeated Málaga 1-0 thanks to a goal from Antoine Griezmann.

On November 13, 2017, the stadium used video replays for the first time in Spanish football history during a Copa del Rey match between Atlético Madrid and Elche.

On April 21, 2018, the stadium hosted the Copa del Rey final, with Barcelona defeating Sevilla 5-0.

Before the start of the 2018/19 season, the club set a record by selling 56,407 season tickets, which accounted for 83% of the stadium's total capacity.

That summer, the Madrid metro station was renamed from Estadio Olimpico to Estadio Metropolitano, given its proximity to the stadium.

On June 1, 2019, the stadium hosted the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League final, with Liverpool defeating Tottenham 2-0.

On July 19, 2022, following the completion of the agreement with Wanda Group, the stadium was renamed Civitas Metropolitano.

On October 9, 2024, the arena was renamed Riyadh Air Metropolitano, following the club's termination of its contract with Civitas.
