The Austrian national football team represents their country on the international stage. Their last appearance at the World Cup finals was in 1998, held in France, but they failed to advance past the group stage. In 2008, Austria co-hosted the European Championship with Switzerland, with both teams automatically qualifying as hosts. However, neither Austria nor Switzerland were able to advance from their group stage at that tournament, held on their home soil. In 2016, Austria again competed at the European Championship, but again failed to advance beyond the group stage. However, in 2021, the team reached the round of 16 for the first time in its history at the 2020 European Championship.
The Austrian team primarily plays its home matches at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna. As of April 4, 2024, the national team is ranked 25th in the FIFA World Rankings. Previously, as of October 11, 2017, it was in 13th place in the UEFA ranking.
