The Netherlands is represented on the international football stage by a national team, known locally as the Nederlands voetbalelftal. Its activities are coordinated by the Royal Dutch Football Association.
The Netherlands national team is regularly considered a leading contender for World and European Championships. Despite this, the title of world champion remains elusive. The team has reached three World Cup finals in 1974, 1978, and 2010, but has always lost to its opponents. This has earned it a reputation as one of the most unsuccessful teams in World Cup final history. Their only European triumph was in 1988. In the 1970s, the team earned the nickname "A Clockwork Orange" due to their orange uniform and impressive level of play, a reference to Anthony Burgess's novel of the same name.
As of April 3, 2025, the team is ranked 7th in the FIFA rankings and 6th in the UEFA list.
