Portugal national football team

The Portugal national football team represents their country internationally, participating in various tournaments and friendly matches.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, specifically after 2002, the Portuguese team has steadily risen to the ranks of the world's leading teams. In 2004, they won silver at the European Championship on home soil, unexpectedly losing 1-0 to Greece in the final. This tournament marked Cristiano Ronaldo's first with the national team. Two years later, Portugal reached the World Cup semifinals. They also reached the semifinals at Euro 2012. In 2016, the Portuguese national team won the European Championship for the first time in their history, beating France 1-0 in the final thanks to Eder's goal in the second extra time. Remarkably, the team only recorded one regulation-time victory throughout the entire tournament—over Wales in the semifinals.

Three years after their success at Euro 2016, Portugal won another trophy, becoming the first UEFA Nations League winners.

As of October 17, 2025, the Portuguese national team is ranked fifth in the FIFA rankings.

Since 2000, Portugal has consistently participated in all World Cups and European Championships, failing to advance to the knockout stages only twice at the 2002 and 2014 World Cups. This makes them one of the most consistent teams of the 21st century.
