The Qatar national football team represents the country internationally and is governed by the Qatar Football Association. The team has won the Asian Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023.
Prior to 2022, Qatar had not participated in the World Cup finals, but in 2022, it was awarded the right to compete in the tournament as a host nation. However, Qatari footballers have previously competed in Olympic football twice, in 1984 and 1992. At the 1992 Olympics, the team reached the quarterfinals, which remained their most significant achievement for a long time.
In 2006, the Qatar national team won gold in the football tournament at the Asian Games. Qatar also won the Gulf Cup in 1992 and 2004, both times as the host nation. Although the national team has never qualified for the World Cup finals, the U20 team finished second at the 1981 FIFA U-20 World Cup, losing only to West Germany.
Qatar's first major success on the international stage came in 2019, when they won the Asian Cup. The team posted an impressive record: seven wins out of seven matches with a combined score of 19-1, including the final against Japan. Forward Almoez Ali was the tournament's top scorer and player.
In preparation for the World Cup, the Qatari team participated as an invited team in the 2019 Copa América and twice in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, in 2021 and 2023.
