The Switzerland national football team, known in various languages โโas the Swiss Football Association, the Swiss Football Association, the Swiss Calcio Nazionale, and the Swiss Football Association, is governed by the Swiss Football Association.
In the 1960s, the Swiss national team suffered a long period of failure that lasted nearly three decades. It was only in the early 1990s that English coach Roy Hodgson managed to restore the team to world-class status, reaching the final stages of the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship. Under Kobi Kuhn, Ottmar Hitzfeld's predecessor, the team reached the final stages of the 2004 European Championship and the 2006 World Cup. At the last tournament, the Swiss advanced from their group but lost to Ukraine in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout (regulation and extra time ended 0-0). Remarkably, the team did not concede a single goal in regulation time during any of their matches.
In 2008, Switzerland co-hosted the European Championship with Austria. At that tournament, the hosts finished bottom of their group but managed to defeat Portugal. In 2016, participating in the European Championship for the fourth time, the Swiss team advanced past the group stage for the first time thanks to a victory over Albania and draws with Romania and France.
As of April 3, 2025, the Swiss national team is ranked 20th in the FIFA rankings and 17th in the UEFA rankings.
